Comedy Con 2020: Developing the Business of Comedy

Comedy Con 2020, in partnership with UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, is a two-day conference hosted by GOLIATH AND GOLIATH that aims to develop the comedy industry in South Africa. By curating interactive workshops, engaging stakeholders and delivering much-needed insight, the conference aims to propel the comedy landscape in South Africa.

Comedians, major brands, agencies and members of the media will come together on the 2nd and 3rd of April at the UJ Arts Centre in Auckland Park to be part of the conference. Looking at working comedians in particular, the conference will host some of the biggest names in comedy and cater to its corporate and creative stakeholders.

The items on the agenda include a keynote address by Joseph Opio, a Ugandan writer who works on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah, sharing learnings about the differences in industry, working environments and expectations held by audiences and clients alike.

Issues of gender-based violence and mental health, the perpetuation of stereotypes within the industry as well as the type of positive impact the industry is able to make around those issues will also be addressed.

As working comedians will be the primary focus across the two days, GOLIATH AND GOLIATH will host a corporate master class. Guiding performers on what makes a successful corporate event, the conversation will unpack the value of being a professional on and off stage.

Brands will have the opportunity to engage delegates on globalising their content, becoming entertainment citizens of the world, creating a business culture within the creative and cultural industry as well as how to develop audiences and looking into the management of brand finances.

Delegates will receive training for TikTok and be engaged on other platforms that will heighten their visibility online. Also, as intellectual property is a hot topic within the creative sphere, and legal experts will unpack the importance of Intellectual Property, contracts and overarching entertainment law.

Delegates are urged to register for only R350 for both days. Tickets are now available at https://arts.uj.ac.za/show/ComedyCon20/
