Arts and culture internship programme opens for applications

Arts & Culture at the University of Johannesburg is calling for applications for internships funded by Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA).

A range of internships are available at several arts and culture organisations including:

  • UJ Arts & Culture - Interns will be based at the UJ Arts Centre on the Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park
  • Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) - Interns will be based at the FADA Building on the Bunting Road Campus in Auckland Park)
  • Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) - Interns will be based at the BASA offices in Melville.
  • POPArt Studios – Interns will be remote and work at various venues in a festival environment.

There are 30 internships available related to:

  • Sales / Marketing
  • Multimedia Design
  • Digital Artist
  • Sound Technician
  • Light Technician
  • Gallery or Museum Asisstant/Guide

  • Programme / Project Administration

Internships will commence December 2022 and run for a period of 12-months. Recent graduates with relevant qualifications are eligible to apply. Applications will close on 23 October 2022 and no late applications will be accepted. Internships details:

Copywriting internship 

The intern will receive mentorship on writing copy for social media campaigns, adverts, media statements and magazine and online articles. The aim of the internship is to develop computer literacy, writing skills, creative thinking, innovation, planning and organising skills and good work ethics. Requirements - Diploma or Degree in these areas: Publicity, Writing, Copy Editing, and/or Advertising.

Multimedia internship 

The intern will receive mentorship on animating content and images for social media advertising and archiving, recording interviews and editing, compiling show reels for advertisement. The aim of the internship is to develop computer literacy, editing and filming skills, animating content, creative thinking, innovation, planning and organising skills and good work ethics. Requirements - Diploma or Degree in these areas: Publicity, Writing, Copy Editing, and/or Advertising.

Event management internship

The intern will be mentored on planning and coordination of a wide range of events. The aim of the internship is to develop event planning and coordination capabilities, computer literacy, planning and coordination skills, communication skills, creative thinking, innovation, and good work ethics. Requirements - Diploma or Degree in these areas: Functions Management, Exhibition Organising, Event Planning, Marketing Campaign Organising, Conference and Event Organising, Destination Management, Government Protocol or Civic Event Organising, Exhibition Directing, Function Planning, Wedding Planning, Trade Fair Management, Social/Life Cycle Coordination and/or Conference Planning.

Programme / Project Administration

The Intern will be mentored on administrative functions including relations with guests / clients / sponsors / partners / service providers, assisting with programme and/or project planning and implementation. The aim of the internship is to develop administrative skills that would relate to especially computer literacy, planning and coordination skills, communication skills, creative thinking, innovation, and good work ethics. Requirements - Diploma or Degree in the following areas: Project Coordinator, Course Coordinator, Administrator, Administration Officer, Assistant Secretary, Strategic Support Officer, Programme / Project Coordinator, Project Planner, Project Controller, and/or Project Advisor.

Sound Technician

The intern will be mentored on technical knowledge including assembling, operating and maintaining the technical equipment used to record, amplify, enhance, mix or reproduce sound. The aim of the internship is to develop strong balanced hearing ability, a technical knowledge of electricity and electronics, knowledge of the capabilities of different types of sound equipment, attention to detail and understand health and safety requirements, good communication, creative thinking, innovation, planning and organising skills and good work ethics. Requirements - Diploma or Degree in the following areas: Video and Sound Recorder, Sound Effects Person, Re-recording Mixer, Dubbing Projectionist (Sound Mixing), Dubbing Machine Operator, Sound Editor / Mixer / Recordist / Operator / Specialist, Audio Technician, and/or Audio Operator.

Light Technician

The intern will be mentored on technical knowledge including assembling, operating and maintaining the technical equipment used for stage lighting. The aim of the internship is to develop strong ability and technical knowledge of theatre lighting, knowledge of the capabilities of different types of lighting equipment, attention to detail and understand health and safety requirements, good communication, creative thinking, innovation, planning and organising skills and good work ethics. Requirements - Diploma or Degree in the following areas: Lighting Electrician, Lighting Operator, Lighting Technician, Lighting Assistant, and/or Lighting Director.

Digital Artist 

The intern will be mentored on design including creating visual content for a variety of media, developing illustrations, animations, or other types of artworks that will be used in digital advertisements, websites, television shows, movies etc.  The aim of the internship is to develop drawing, painting, and design skills, making models, animation skills (2D and 3D), coding skills, knowledge of animation software, knowledge of print, film, television or video game production.

Requirements Diploma or Degree in the following areas: Calligrapher, Lithographic Artist, Display Artist, Advertising Artist / Designer, Lettering Designer, Art Director, Exhibition / Display Designer, Film and Video Graphics Designer, Commercial Artist, Graphic Artist, and/or Publication Designer.

Sales / Marketing

The intern will be mentored on sales and marketing strategies including contributing information, ideas, and research to help develop marketing strategies, assists with detailing, designing, and implementing marketing plans for each product or service being offered. This will include marketing schedules and coordination with colleagues, sponsors, media representatives, and other professionals to implement strategies across multiple channels, and to help develop sales strategies and approaches for various products and services, track sales data and work towards meeting quotas or sales team goals, analyses trends, data, demographics, pricing strategies, and other information that can potentially improve marketing and sales performance. All the basic conditions of service of the University will apply. Policies and procedures of the University or internship hosts will apply. The aim of the internship is to develop customer service, selling, negotiating and influencing, analysis and decision-making, creative thinking, innovation, and good work ethics. Requirements - Diploma or Degree in the following areas: Key Account Manager, Insurance Sales and Marketing Manager, Business Development Manager, and/or Business Support Manager.

Gallery/ Museum Assistant/Guide

The Intern will be mentored on gallery service including providing administrative assistance, creative services, and customer service for a gallery. This includes speaking with visitors, answering phone calls, assisting with events and exhibitions as well as assisting gallery designers and the gallery collection. The aim of the internship is to develop computer literacy, planning and coordination skills, communication skills, creative thinking, innovation, and good work ethics. Requirements - Diploma or Degree in Museum in the following areas: Gallery Attendant, Museum Host and Tour Coordinator and/or Gallery Assistant.
