UJ Art Gallery call for artists to paint outgoing UJ Chancellor Professor Njabulo Ndebele

UJ Arts & Culture a division of the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture (FADA) and the UJ Art Gallery invites mid-career, emerging and established African artists to submit proposals for the commission to paint the outgoing Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg, Professor Njabulo Ndebele, whose term ends in September.

Prominent academic, author and chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Professor Njabulo Ndebele has served two terms as the Chancellor at the University of Johannesburg. The University of Johannesburg regularly commissions portraits of the people who have played their part in the success of the institution. These portraits celebrate their success and their contribution and inspire others in turn.

“2022 is a significant year for the UJ Art Gallery, we are witnessing several changes and significant developments in our space. We are privileged to have been entrusted with commissioning a portrait of the outgoing Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg, Professor Njabulo Ndebele. Prof Ndebele has played a significant role in the development and transformation of the arts across South Africa; being responsible for this commission is an honour for the Art Gallery, and we look forward to working with the successful artist in materializing this project,” says UJ Art Gallery Curator Thabo Seshoka.

The adjudication criteria will be based on originality, quality, technical competence, strength of the concept, medium (oil on canvas) and size (height 110 cm x width 100 cm).

To apply mid-career, emerging and established African artists will need to submit the following:

  1. A brief portfolio of work (three images of previous artworks).
  2. A brief biography and list of previous commissions and/or exhibitions.
  3. A cost estimate
