The University of Johannesburg Choir presents its International Concert Series – a choral experience that brings together ensembles from France, Switzerland and the United States. Set across multiple venues, the series unfolds as a sequence of distinct performances, each shaped by its own space, sound and cultural exchange.
Across four concerts, UJ Choir hosts Le Choeur du Petit Conservatoire de l’Est (France), a youth ensemble grounded in a refined European choral lineage; Hendricks Chapel Choir (USA), recognised for its rich liturgical depth and enduring choral excellence; Knabenkantorei Basel (Switzerland), a boys’ choir defined by precision and discipline; and Morgan State University Choir (USA), internationally acclaimed for powerful interpretations of spirituals and a globally resonant repertoire.
Each performance offers a unique encounter. Voices trained in different traditions meet within spaces across Johannesburg – distinct in character, unified in standard. The result is a concert series that is measured, immersive and musically expansive, where interpretation, discipline and expression are held in balance.
Beyond the performances, the series creates a space for exchange – where students, artists and audiences engage across cultures through shared musical practice. It reflects the University of Johannesburg as a globally connected institution, where the arts are used as a platform for learning, collaboration and real-world engagement. By bringing these choirs into conversation with one another and with the city, the programme contributes to building cultural understanding, expanding access to the arts, and strengthening connections within and beyond the University of Johannesburg.
As UJ Choir conductor Sizwe Mondlane notes, “the global exchange of artforms gives us a platform to learn from each other, making collaboration essential for an ever-evolving choral landscape. We look forward to hosting these remarkable choirs and engaging in a shared passion shaped by diverse worldviews.”
