UJ Arts & Culture Announces 2024 Internship Opportunities

The University of Johannesburg’s Arts & Culture is thrilled to kick off the New Year with exciting internship opportunities hosted by the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE), UJ Protection Services, UJ Sports, UJ Alumni, Joburg Ballet, Market Theatre Foundation, The Windybrow Arts Centre. At UJ Arts & Culture, we pride ourselves in providing opportunities to the youth where they can expand their skill sets in arts and culture related industries. 

A range of internships are available at several arts and culture organisations including: 

  1. UJ Arts & Culture – Interns will be based at the UJ Arts Centre on the Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park, Bunting Campus, Doornfontein, and Soweto Campus. 
  1. Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) at UJ – Interns will be based at the FADA Building on the Bunting Road Campus in Auckland Park. 
  1. UJ Alumni – Interns will be based at UJ Madibeng building on the Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park. 
  1. Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) at UJ – Interns will be based at the Dean’s office at Doornfontein Campus. 
  1. UJ Protection Services – Interns will be based at Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park. 
  1. UJ Sports – Interns will be based on Bunting Campus in Auckland Park.  
  1. Joburg Ballet – Interns will be based in Braamfontein. 
  1. Market Theatre Foundation – Interns will be based at the Market Theatre in Newtown. 
  1. The Windybrow Arts Centre – Interns will be based at the Windybrow Arts Centre at New Doornfontein. 

 

There are 19 internships available related to: 

Events Management (4) 

Administrative Management (15) 

Internships will commence in March 2024 and run for a period of 12-months. Recent graduates with relevant qualifications are eligible to apply. Applications will open on 18 January and close on 5 February 2024 at 12:00 pm and no late applications will be accepted. Applicants will be paid a monthly stipend of R5000.00 (subject to statutory deductions). 

Internships details are as follows: 

Events Management 

The intern will be mentored on planning and coordination of a wide range of events. Additionally, interns will have access to the UJ Library for further development. The internship aims to develop event planning and coordination capabilities, computer literacy, planning and coordination skills, communication skills, creative thinking, innovation, and good work ethics. 

Minimum requirements: Diploma or Degree in Events Management, Marketing, Tourism Management, Hospitality Management, Business Administration and/or related fields.

Administrative Management 

The Intern will be mentored on administrative functions and systems related to the internal programme and project planning and implementation. The internship’s aim is to develop administrative skills, specifically computer literacy, planning and coordination skills, communication skills, creative thinking, innovation, and good work ethics. 

Minimum requirements: Diploma or Degree or the above relevant qualification in Administration Management.

UJ Sport a division at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), aims to develop the holistic student-athlete and sustain young talent by providing the ultimate student-experience, quality university sport participation opportunities and the best coaching personnel. The Communications Unit is responsible for content production and various sporting events that cover all the major competitions at and away from UJ.

About Market Theatre Foundation 

The Market Theatre, founded in Johannesburg in 1976 by Mannie Manim and the late Barney Simon, was constructed out of Johannesburg’s Indian Fruit Market – built in 1913. The theatre went on to become internationally renowned as South Africa’s “Theatre of the Struggle”. During the past four decades, The Market Theatre has evolved into a cultural complex for theatre, music, dance and the allied arts. Today, The Market Theatre remains at the forefront of South African theatre, actively encouraging new works that continue to reach international stages. 

 

About Windybrow Arts Centre  

The Windybrow Arts Centre is the 4th of the Market Theatre Foundation’s Arts divisions, framing itself as a space for thought leadership, Literacy and Pan African Expression. Nestled in the small cultural Hub of New Doornfontein, the Heritage house stands out from between the modern city buildings, boasting Victorian architecture from a by-gone era. The old lady, built in 1896, is one of one the oldest and most treasured of the Johannesburg Heritage houses, under the department of the National Department of Sports Arts and Culture. In partnership with residency company Honest Travel Experiences, The Windybrow Heritage house has become a keen tourist destination with a growing number of visitors interested in learning about the Johannesburg Gold Rush of the 18th Century.
