UJ Arts & Culture hosts comedy marathon

Bringing the 2018 UJ comedy season to a close, UJ Arts & Culture once again teams up with POPArt and GOLIATH and GOLIATH to host an ‘Out the Box’ comedy marathon at the UJ Art Centre Theatre on 5 October.

This rapid-fire comedy marathon brings together twenty of South Africa’s funniest comedians each performing a five minute set in the Art Centre Theatre. The line-up includes UJ Arts & Culture alumnus Ebenhaezer Dibakwane, who starred in ‘Marat/Sade’, ‘A Beautiful Thing’, ‘The Crucible’ and ‘Horror Story’ while studying at UJ. Ebenhaezer rose to fame after winning the Newcomer Award at the 6th annual Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards in September 2016, going on to be cast in the role of Kaygee in the SABC1 sitcom ‘Thuli noThulani’, and a presenter on the SABC1 show ‘Walala Wasala’.

Other comedians performing at this not-to-be-missed comedy showcase include Stig, Muzi Dlamini, Nkosinathi Maki, Mo Mothebe, Suhayl Essa, Mbali Gudazi, Thabiso Mhlongo, Emilio Tobias, Tsitsi Chiumya, Nathaneal, Gavin Kelly, Dillan Oliphant, Bexta, Cobus van Rensburg, Kraai du Toit, Ian Young, Prins and Waylene Beukes.

In 2016; following the success of the Out the Box Comedy series at POPArt, also presented in partnership with GOLIATH and GOLIATH; UJ Arts & Culture (a division of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Johannesburg) launched an extension of the series in collaboration with its originators, offering a monthly evening of comedy presented on UJ’s Auckland Park campuses.

“The Out the Box Comedy series at UJ has been exceptionally well received by students and staff and fits in perfectly with our audience development strategies. UJ has become known as the place where new material is seen first. It is these kinds of mutually beneficial partnerships that have the potential strengthen the industry by extending the circuit for, in this instance, stand-up comedy,” says Head of UJ Arts & Culture, Pieter Jacobs.

This ‘20 in 5’ Out the Box Comedy showcase is scheduled for Friday 5 October at 19:30 at the UJ Art Centre Theatre on the University’s Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park, and brings to a close the 2018 UJ comedy season. Tickets cost R50 or R20 for students and are available at the door. Given the popularity of these events, advanced online booking is strongly recommended. Online bookings close at midnight on Thursday 4 October 2018 via https://arts.uj.ac.za/show/ComedyFinal/ Please note, no latecomers are allowed.
