UJ Department of Fashion Design Presents the 2024 3rd Year Fashion Student Showcase

Johannesburg, South Africa – November 23, 2024 – The University of Johannesburg’s Department of Fashion Design located within the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture (FADA) ,proudly presents the highly anticipated 2024 3rd Year Fashion Student Showcase. This showcase, set to take place on the 23rd of November 2024 at 18:00 pm at the UJ Bunting Theatre, will highlight the exceptional work and creativity of the department’s final-year students from the Diploma in Fashion Production and BA in Fashion Design students.

The showcase provides a platform for young, emerging designers to present their innovative collections, featuring bold and thought-provoking designs that reflect a fusion of creativity, craftsmanship, and contemporary African fashion. This year’s showcase promises to capture a feel of young South African fashion talent while addressing relevant social themes through the lens of fashion design. As these students take their final steps into the professional world, they bring with them a fresh perspective on fashion’s role in culture, identity, and society. The Department is very excited to collaborate with UJ Arts and Culture, which is responsible for crowd-pulling events such as the UJ Weekend of Jazz and Poetry Africa and (R)evolution of Words. We also anticipate VIP guests in attendance and sponsors made up of prestigious industry professionals and fashion brands.

The Department of Fashion Design regards itself as a role player in the local fashion system in that it actively uses fashion education as an important element of this entire system. Our endeavour is to inculcate in our students the desire to become a part of the exciting fashion scene and inspire them to make a difference. After graduating from their respective programmes, a majority of our graduates embark on careers in the national fashion and design industry. The graduate fashion exhibition becomes a way for the department to celebrate the talent that we have by providing them with a platform to stage and communicate their unique identities. It is also a celebration of their commitment and hard work during the three years. The showcase is framed around the Zulu idea of umhalaliselo (noun for celebration, cheering on)” says Dr. Khaya Mchunu head of  the Fashion Design department

Tickets for the 2024 3rd Year Fashion Student Showcase are now available for only R120.
