Hannah teaches the method “Speaking Body”- an improvisation method she created from the base of contemporary and classical dance, yoga and acting methods. Workshops will start with the ‘Speaking body’ and will be followed by engagement with some of her choreographic material, and a short improvisation section.
Hannah Ma is a German-Chinese choreographer. Her focus lies on contemporary rituals and the translation of archaic roots within our society. She was educated at the Conservatory in Vienna and the John Cranko School, Stuttgart and was a fellow of the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg. Hannah also studied Cultural Sciences with a focus on philosophy. She worked in Freiburg (DE), Museumsquatier (A), Theatre Trier (DE) and freelanced all over the world. She danced in works from choreographers such as: John Cranko, Uwe Scholz, Birgit Scherzer, Hans van Manen, Sven Grützmacher and more. Her work has been shown, for example, at Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen (DE), Festival Passages / Metz (FR), and during the APAP Conference New York (NY). Hannah won several awards as a dancer and choreographer including Theatermaske from the Richard Wagner association (DE), the Brückenpreis Rhinland-Phalatinate (DE), and she was nominated for the German Engagementpreis in 2016. Swan is to be performed at UJ’s Con Cowan Theatre from 20 – 22 September 2018, and will be followed by a short Q&A at each performance. Tickets for the performances are available via uj.ac.za/arts.
