Duo Muze

This March UJ Arts & Culture proudly welcomes the international contemporary Duo Muze, featuring virtuoso musicians Bernadette Zeilinger and Diego Muné, for an exclusive one-night only concert at the UJ Art Centre, Kingsway Campus on 15 March at 19:30.

With Bernadette Zeilinger on the contrabass recorder and Diego Muné on guitar, this avant-garde duo have taken their uniquely specific and flexible musical language around the world. Their expressive and touching style has captivated audiences and garnered critical acclaim in Europe, Great Britain, the USA, Mexico, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. They inspire their audiences with their passion and warmth while performing to a high level of perfection.

An astute and technically brilliant composer and performer, Bernadette Zeilinger, holds degrees in Education (University of Vienna), Music/Recorder (University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) and in Specialized Music Performance (University of Applied Sciences and Arts North-western Switzerland/Music in Basel), where she studied with Alfred Zimmerlin and Fred Frith. In 2009 and in 2010 she was nominated for an Erasmus residency at Zurich University of the Arts where she specialised in the notation of contemporary playing techniques. In 2009 she won an award from the Austrian International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM), in recognition of her radio feature about contemporary music. She has also been awarded several grants.

With his own characteristic style guitar virtuos and composer Diego Muné grew up playing contemporary new music, dodecaphonism, classical music, Argentinian folklore, blues and jazz. He has performed on more than 500 CD productions and recorded music for several films. He was the musical director of the film “El Gran Vuelo”, which won the prizes Prix Som Cinema, Alcances, CIMA, AICE, Feroz Puerta Oscura, Sole Luna and the award of the Festival of Malaga.

Together, Bernadette Zeilinger and Diego Muné in cooperation with Forum Zeitgeschichte and the University of Vienna also curate La Musa, an international transdisciplinary project for new contemporary and present music, art and culture.

Duo Muze forms part of UJ Arts & Culture’s  #ListenToYourHeART Music Concert Series. This phenomenal pair can be enjoyed at the UJ Art Centre, Kingsway Campus on 15 March at 19:30. The concert is free to all staff and students of the University of Johannesburg as well as the broader community.
