The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Choir, nestled within the Department of Arts & Culture, under the direction of newly appointed Senior Choirmaster Sizwe Mondlane, is proud to present For Light, its first public concert of 2025. This much-anticipated performance marks a new era for the choir as it continues to build on the momentum of its 50th anniversary celebrated in 2024.
Taking the stage with renewed energy and camaraderie, the UJ Choir enters its next chapter alongside a university-wide milestone: the 20th anniversary of the University of Johannesburg. The For Light concert will be a beacon in these dual celebrations, setting the tone for a year of reflection, joy, and forward-looking creativity.
“For Light is more than a concert—it is a reminder of why we sing: to nurture the light inside ourselves and to spark that same light in others,” says Mondlane. “In a world where darkness often seems overwhelming, this concert invites us to pause, reflect, and reignite hope, joy, and connection through song.”
Featuring a rich and diverse repertoire of choral works, For Light weaves together the musical traditions of Estonia, Latvia, Poland, and South Africa. From intricate Western harmonies to the vibrant rhythms and textures of African music, the performance will showcase the UJ Choir’s distinctive, expressive sound that continues to captivate audiences both locally and abroad.
Join the UJ Choir for an unforgettable evening of music and inspiration—a celebration of unity, resilience, and the enduring power of the human voice. Let your spirit be lifted, and your light rekindled.
