Gloria Bosman & UJ Choir Live in Concert

UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) at the University of Johannesburg is excited to announce the world-renowned UJ Choir’s up-coming concert with Afro Jazz diva of South Africa, Gloria Bosman, on 13th of September at the UJ Art Centre Theatre on the University of Johannesburg’s Kingsway Campus. I

Inspired by love and nature, this unusual fusion of art forms and music styles will be a first of its kind and a highlight for both UJ Choir and their audiences. The concert will feature choral gems as well as musical arrangements created especially for this event and is sure to be a musical treat.

Supporting Bosman and the Choir singers are jazz pianist Pebble Mambane, cellist Gerrit Koorsen, harpist Jude HarpStar and percussionist Tlale Makhene. The concert will also feature a young and upcoming vocal group that birthed from UJ Choir called Breathe.

UJ Choir are world champions, having taken gold in both the Mixed Choirs Western music repertoire and Folk Music A Cappella and was crowned Champions of the World in the Folk Music A Cappella at the World Choir Games 2018. The UJ Choir highlights the combination of talent and resilience found in students who are driven by their passion for excellence.

Bosman was one of the adjudicators of the Folk-Song category of the World Choir Games last year, and she fell in love with the choir. Out of this mutual appreciation and awe, a dream to do a concert together was born. The fans are in for a treat!

UJ Choir’s concert takes place at the UJ Arts Centre on the University of Johannesburg’s Kingsway Campus, Auckland Park. All proceeds of this one night only performance is in aid of getting the Choir to the World Choir Games in Flanders 2020.

Tickets range from R 80 – R150 are now are available via https://arts.uj.ac.za or at the door. For more information contact Lakin Morgan-Baatjies lakinmb@uj.ac.za or on 011 447 2690.

I was with Alison at the concert – MA Farquharson – and although the choir was fantastic at times, especially with Past Life Melodies and the medley of 3 sacred songs, Gloria Bosman’s contribution was grim, in part because she didn’t seem to connect with some of the compositions, and in the main because her microphone (and those of her accompanying band) were too loud. Also, the smoke released in the first half of the programme was distracting. We feared the choir would break out coughing (one of the singers had a coughing fit later, but whether this was to do with the smoke, I don’t know). Give us the choir and only the choir any day!

A choir is not the appropriate forum for Gloria to demonstrate her very lovely voice. In our opinion she spoilt the choir music. We would like to hear choir singing on their own, and Gloria’s genre is better suited to a smokey night club.

I am Heike Hofmeyr (heikehofmeyr@gmail.com Alison did the booking for us. The choir was excellent and I would have loved to hear more of the choir only. The reason why I rate the concert 3 out of 5 is the singing of Gloria Bosman. For the choir I would give 5 out of 5 Gloria Bosman has an amazing range in her voice, but she sang her own melodies and did not really sing together with the choir. Sometimes you could hardly hear the choir. The highlight of the first halve was the last song without Gloria Bosman – Past Life Melodies. The first part of the second halve was absolutely beautiful, again the choir only. In the other songs, Gloria Bosman sang sometimes more together with the choir, but her voice was at times drowning out the choir. but I still enjoyed the concert and thank UJ Arts and Culture for this opportunity to listen to some great music. Thank you, Heike Hofmeyr

Sound engineers made some errors (mike left on) & noisy at back of theatre. Late start resulted in sons patrons leaving during interval. The choir was amazing!

Thanks for a wonderful evening! Our guests were a bit dubious but were bowled over. Apart from the choir (so engaged, enthusiastic, talented and professional – what a superb choir mistress they must have) and Gloria B, the theatre itself is a great venue, especially compared to the Wits equivalent.
