Offered to students from across the institution, the UJ Arts Academy presents a range of opportunities in dance, drama and poetry that culminates in an annual showcase, this year scheduled to take place at the Bunting Theatre from 20 to 22 October.
UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture (FADA), is proud to offer students a robust programme including weekly classes, workshops and masterclasses led by seasoned industry professionals. Additionally, through the Arts Appreciation Programme, students are exposed to full spectrum of arts and culture.
“Over the past year, students have really brought their passion to the programme and the annual end-of-year showcase is UJ Arts & Culture’s way of affording students an opportunity to put in practice what they have worked and present the fruits of the labour on a professional platform,” says Karabo Mtshali, UJ Arts & Culture Operations Manager and Producer.
The Poetry Showcase, titled ‘These Hands Part 2’, interrogates the rewards, horrors and consequences of the work of our hands. Poets from across all four campuses will present collaborative performances centered around the theme.
Under the title ‘Growing Voices’, the Drama Showcase features monologues from the drama students incorporating contemporary themes of urban youth.
The Dance Showcase titled ‘The Marathon’ explores the journey of individuals who are constantly trying to prove that they are better than others but end up realising that they share the same visions and goals. The only thing left it to work together to achieve their goals.
Not to be missed, the UJ Arts Academy Showcase interweaves drama, poetry in dance in a two-hour experience that will take place at the Bunting Theatre, on the Bunting Road Campus on the following days:
- 20 October: 18:00 – 20:00
- 21 October: 18:00 – 20:00
- 22 October: 14:00 – 16:00
