Legacy Concert 2026

The University of Johannesburg Choir (UJ Choir) concludes its 2026 season with the Legacy Concert, a celebration of music and an enduring legacy.

Over the years, members of UJ Choir have carried their experiences beyond the university, establishing new ensembles and contributing to the broader choral landscape. Quava Vocal Group is one such expression of that legacy. Founded by UJ Choir alumnus Sabelo Mthembu, Quava continues this connection under the direction of Sikhulule Mlokoti, who is himself a former member of UJ Choir.

The Legacy Concert has traditionally brought together three ensembles: Quava Vocal Group, Veni Cantare and UJ Choir. Veni Cantare, conducted by Sizwe Mondlane and also connected to the UJ Choir family, will not participate in this year’s edition. Its absence, however, does not diminish the spirit of the occasion. This year’s concert offers an opportunity to focus on the enduring relationship between UJ Choir and Quava Vocal Group.

“The Legacy Concert is about more than bringing choirs onto one stage,” says Sizwe Mondlane, conductor of UJ Choir. “It is about recognising the journey that connects us: the people who sang together, the experiences we shared and the ways in which those experiences continue to influence the music we create today.”

The concert will also serve as a fitting conclusion to an extremely busy and rewarding 2026 season for UJ Choir. Following multidisciplinary projects, joint concerts and national and international tours, the choir will take to the stage for the final time this year, inviting audiences to celebrate not only the music of the present but also the people and stories that have helped shape its journey.

The evening offers an opportunity to experience a shared legacy expressed through choral music: two ensembles with different journeys, connected by a common musical home.
