NESTING FLIGHT

For decades the classical ballet Swan Lake has captivated the world. Moving to a more contemporary world, NESTING FLIGHT explores parallels between humans and birds – dissecting their ways of communication, social habits and movements patterns through dance.

NESTING FLIGHT will feature Oakfields College dance students, performing in a comical choreographic piece entitled Dancing Birds, created by dance lecturer Laura de Vries and subject head Ignatius van Heerden which explores the various means of communication between both humans and birds.

Continuing their commitment to nurture young and up-coming creatives, Oakfields College has commissioned two recent graduates and aspiring choreographers to create new dance pieces to include in this year’s dance season.

A Birds Eye View  by Joshua Groenveld puts focus on the migration and flight patterns of birds, while Gabriela Dos Santos’ piece Eagle explores the concept of the ‘King of the Sky’ and how humans can use those principles to achieve success and abundance in all areas of life.

A Birds Eye View – Joshua Groenveld

“Collectively feathers fly- Alone they fall.

From hatching to migration, birds of a feather flock together. Cracking the shell and opening a window into flight patterns and chaotic routines of being a bird.”

Eagle – Gabriela Dos Santos

“Eagle explores the mentality of the ‘King of the Sky’ and how we can use those principles to achieve success and abundance in all areas of life. It’s about recognising ones full potential, having a clear vision of what one truly seeks in life, rising above the storm and soaring at the greatest heights. “

Dancing Birds – Ignatius van Heerden and Laura de Vries

Based entirely on the popular Netflix documentary, Dancing with the Birds, Dancing Birds draws inspiration from the mating dances, movement and patterns of exotic birds.  Making it more human, the work shows how the same interaction is visible in everyday human situations.
