In a spectacular celebration of artistry and heritage, Tribhangi Dance Theatre, hosted by the University of Johannesburg Arts & Culture, proudly presents a Triple Bill featuring the esteemed Moving Into Dance and Cape Ballet Africa. This performance marks a significant milestone as Tribhangi celebrates its 35th anniversary.
This unique Triple Bill brings together three celebrated South African dance companies, showcasing the vibrant and diverse landscape of local talent. Cape Ballet Africa makes its Johannesburg debut as Tribhangi warmly welcomes them to share this momentous occasion. With a shared journey of over 30 years, Moving Into Dance and Tribhangi’s collaboration highlights the beauty of South African dance.
Audiences are invited to immerse themselves in this cultural kaleidoscope, where creativity and tradition collide to deliver an unforgettable experience. Tribhangi Dance Theatre, under the artistic direction of Jayesperi Moopen, is renowned for its ability to blend various genres, resuscitating tradition with contemporary energy. The company’s commitment to experimentation and innovation is exemplified in the work Elements, which debuted at Dance Umbrella in 2018. This dynamic piece, originally commissioned for Tribhangi’s 30- year celebration, was featured on CNN and showcased at the OneDance UK Conference in 2019. The upcoming performance will include a special collaboration between Moving Into Dance and Tribhangi, enhancing the experience even further.
Cape Ballet Africa embodies the rich cultural values of South Africa through dance, emphasizing classical ballet while embracing the country’s heritage. Founded by the esteemed Debbie Turner, the company strives for performance excellence and the ongoing development of its artists, ensuring a bright future for the art form within the African diaspora.
Moving Into Dance (MID) has a legacy rooted in the socio-political landscape of SouthAfrica. Established in 1978, MID continues to advocate for social justice through dance, fostering inclusivity and creativity. Their latest work, The Awakening: Rebirth, created by Artistic Director Sunnyboy Motau, reflects the resilience of the arts community in the wake of the pandemic, exploring themes of introspection and renewal.
