Auditions for the UJ Arts Academy and UJ productions take place at the same time. Students may be selected for either a production, or acting classes – not both. Classes and rehearsals are presented weekly.
Drama (acting) classes
In this category you will be given the basic skills of acting and performance. You will participate in activities that facilitate growth and skills development. At the end of the year students and staff will be given the opportunity to perform in our annual drama showcase that is aimed at showcasing what Academy students have learned throughout the year.
For your audition: Please familiarise yourself with the monologue and make sure you understand what it is about, which play it was extracted from and what it means to you.
To prepare: Audition monologues are to be fetched at the UJ Arts Centre APK campus after booking online.
NB: Monologues of your own choosing will not be accepted.
The Zulu Romeo and Juliet Unplugged Auditions
Love erupts between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet in the midst of their family feud. These two powerful families’ feud make it difficult for the young lovers to be together. Juliet betrothed to marry a man of her father’s choice. Against all odds, Romeo and his Juliet fight their way back to each other, giving up everything, including their lives to be together.
For your audition: Please familiarise yourself with the plot and the characters so that you gain an idea of which role to audition for. You do not need to read the play to do this; plot and character descriptions can be found online.
All UJ students and staff are welcome to audition.

In addition, there will be improvisation, readings and scene work. No need to prepare a speech. Auditioned will be guided in text reading if necessary.

Cast will work as an ensemble to enhance the production process and outcome. There will be meaningful improvisation activities that serve as a means to discovering the internal characteristics and objectives of the characters.
