UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), continues to champion collaboration and exchange across the continent by foregrounding African stories that resonate globally. The upcoming Johannesburg screening of Transactions on 3 October at 18:00 at the Bunting Theatre offers a powerful example of this commitment.
Directed by acclaimed Zimbabwean filmmaker Rumbi Katedza, Transactions explores the intimate realities of migration and remittances sent back home through the lens of one Zimbabwean family. While deeply personal, the film captures a universal truth for countless African families who rely on remittances as a lifeline. At its heart, the documentary unpacks the emotional weight behind “Black Tax” and the tensions it creates between generations, siblings, and those at home and abroad.
Beyond the screening, Katedza will host a hands-on documentary filmmaking workshop, equipping emerging filmmakers with tools to tell their own stories and connect with broader networks.
By foregrounding African stories and realities, Transactions not only illuminates the personal costs of migration but also contributes to building a Pan-Africanist perspective on shared struggles, resilience, and the power of storytelling to bridge borders. In doing so, UJ Arts & Culture affirms its role as a platform where artists and audiences engage meaningfully with urgent social issues through art.
