Following an overwhelming public response, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Choir’s Farewell Concert, scheduled for 15:00 on Saturday, 15 August 2026, is officially sold out.
In response to the demand, UJ Arts & Culture has added a second performance at 19:00 on the same day at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre, UJ Arts Centre, situated on the University’s Kingsway Campus in Auckland Park.
The additional performance offers audiences another opportunity to experience the programme the UJ Choir will present at the World Symposium on Choral Music 2026 in Macau, China.
Selected from hundreds of choirs worldwide, the UJ Choir is one of only 13 ensembles invited to perform at the symposium and the only choir representing the African continent. In a further honour, the Choir has been invited to officially open the symposium programme.
The historic invitation places the UJ Choir at the centre of a global exchange between conductors, composers, scholars, educators and some of the world’s most respected choral ensembles. Through its performance, the Choir will share the richness of African choral music, the creativity of South African composers and the artistic excellence found across the continent.
Rooted in the UJ Choir’s distinctive identity, the Farewell Concert programme features music composed and arranged predominantly by South African musicians. The repertoire celebrates the languages, stories, rhythms and lived experiences that shape South Africa’s musical heritage while presenting a bold, contemporary expression of African choral music.
“This concert is for everyone who has supported, encouraged and carried us to this point,” says Sizwe Mondlane, UJ Choirmaster. “Before we take South African choral music to Macau, we want to share this programme with our supporters and give them an opportunity to send it out into the world with confidence in its authentic representation.”
UJ Arts & Culture extends its sincere appreciation to the audiences, alumni, members of the UJ community and supporters of the Choir who have contributed to the sold-out performance.
Those who were unable to secure tickets for the 15:00 performance is encouraged to book early for the newly added 19:00 concert.
